Dolly the llama is in the hospital after suddenly going blind

5/21/26: UPDATE ON DOLLY:

Dolly has now completed her diagnostics at Cornell. We’re relieved to learn that her recent weight loss appears to be connected to some dental issues, which will be addressed by our vets as soon as she gets home from the hospital. Her eyesight is sadly gone for good now, as it was fragile for the last several years after the original bout of blindness that landed her in our care. She is otherwise relatively healthy for a 15-year-old llama, even one who cannot see! While this is encouraging news, Dolly still needs our help to get through this next stretch of care. Her hospital stay, dental work, and ongoing monitoring and accommodations all come with significant costs, and every gift makes a real difference in helping us give her the comfort and care she deserves.

Help Dolly get the care she needs

Dolly, one of Sweet Farm’s three beloved llamas, has recently gone blind and lost a significant amount of weight, and is currently in the hospital at Cornell receiving diagnostics to determine whether there is a larger underlying problem. Dolly’s story has always been one of resilience, and right now she needs our community to rally around her once again.

Dolly has always been the outgoing and affectionate llama in our herd; the one who wanted hugs and liked meeting new visitors. Now she needs the help of all those souls she has touched. Your donation will help cover the cost of her veterinary care, diagnostics, hospitalization, and any treatment recommended by her care team. Every gift, no matter the size, makes a real difference for Dolly and for the people working hard to help her.

Dolly’s story

Dolly and her best friend Sheika have been part of the Sweet Farm family for six years. They came to us after Dolly went blind and her owners could not care for her. After receiving proper care, Dolly’s health improved and her sight returned — a beautiful reminder of what rescue and rehabilitation can make possible.

Now Dolly needs our support once again. Her new blindness is deeply concerning, and the team at Cornell is working to understand what is happening and what comes next. After ruling out the cause of her previous vision loss, doctors have determined that this time her blindness is permanent. They believe a recent mild eye infection may have pushed her already fragile eyes past their limit, causing irreversible damage.
